CONTRIBUTIONS OF VASCULAR ACCESS TIMES AND INFUSION THERAPY TO PATIENT SAFETY IN HOSPITAL UNITS

Abstract

Infusion therapy is highly complex and involves significant risks of adverse events related to intravascular devices, especially in intensive care units. Due to its potential for complications, nurses play a fundamental role in preventing adverse events by managing risks in patient care. In this context, the vascular access and infusion therapy team (VAIT), composed of a multidisciplinary team, is an essential strategy to ensure patient safety. The aim of this study was to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the evidence on the contribution of these teams to the prevention of complications, standardization of practices, and qualification of nursing care. The research was conducted in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), using the MEDLINE, LILACS, and BDENF-Nursing databases, including articles, dissertations, theses, and educational materials published between 2015 and 2025, using the descriptors "Infusion Therapy" and "Nursing". After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, eight studies were selected. The results indicated that the implementation of (TAVTI) reduces catheter-related infections, complications such as phlebitis, thrombosis, and other adverse events. In line with this, the study also showed that (TAVTI) strengthens the patient safety culture, promotes continuing education for healthcare professionals, and improves the patient experience. The findings demonstrated that the implementation of specialized teams constitutes an effective institutional intervention, capable of increasing patient care safety, optimizing resources, and consolidating the nurse's leading role in the management of evidence-based practices, promoting excellence in hospital care.
