Abstract

This study aims to develop an instrument for assessing bonding and acceptance in a new family during early childhood. The development of the instrument was carried out in five stages: 1) Theoretical framework of the dimensions; 2) Development of the Preliminary Version; 3) Expert Review; 4) Semantic Analysis of Items; and 5) Pilot Application. The theoretical framework for the Bonding and Adaptation was based on the theory of attachment and studies on adaptive behaviors, as well as on a previous systematic review literature. In the preliminary version, the Adult or Child domains were structured, in the dimensions of Attachment and Adaptation. After expert review, the Attachment and Adaptation Inventory for Nuclear Families (IVANF) presented satisfactory percentages and satisfactory indicators of adequacy for 77 instrument items. No changes were made following the semantic analysis and pilot application phases. Future studies investigating the psychometric properties of the IVANF are needed. It is believed that the instrument may contribute to the work of professionals involved in foster care processes, enabling interventions for families based on the needs of their children or children in care.
