EVALUATION OF THE USE OF SSRIS IN THE TREATMENT OF GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER IN ADOLESCENTS

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a persistent state of intense anxiety and restlessness characterized by excessive worry, fear, and apprehension, as well as physiological and cognitive manifestations. This clinical picture is increasingly prevalent in adolescents and can significantly impair their quality of life. Furthermore, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are frequently prescribed to treat anxiety disorders, but their safety and efficacy in adolescents remain a subject of debate. This study reviews the literature on the use of SSRIs in the treatment of GAD in adolescents, focusing on benefits and risks. The methodology included an integrative review, analyzing articles from the last 10 years in the PubMed, SciELO, and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases using the descriptors "adolescents," "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors," "psychopharmacology," and "generalized anxiety disorder." After analyzing articles in databases, it was shown that SSRIs, such as fluoxetine and sertraline, are effective in reducing anxiety symptoms, but present risks, such as suicidal thoughts in some cases. Therefore, despite their effectiveness, SSRI treatment requires rigorous monitoring and, when possible, should be combined with psychotherapy to maximize benefits and reduce risks.
