Abstract

Introduction: Eating behavior is influenced by multiple biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors that directly affect dietary quality as well as individuals’ physical and mental well-being.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between academic stress and eating habits among nursing students at a public university in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. Materials and Methods: This was a quantitative, cross-sectional, and correlational study involving 132 students (75.8% women and 24.2% men). Validated questionnaires were administered to assess academic stress levels and adherence to recommended food portion guidelines.

Results: A total of 79.5% of participants exhibited moderate stress levels, while 20.5% demonstrated high stress levels. None of the students met the recommended intake of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, or animal-based foods. A high consumption of sugary beverages was observed (85.9% among women and 71.9% among men). Statistical analyses (Kruskal–Wallis and Chi-square tests) revealed a significant association between stress levels and the consumption of legumes and fruits, suggesting a potential protective effect of these foods.

Conclusions: The students demonstrated inadequate eating patterns and elevated levels of academic stress, underscoring the need to implement educational strategies that foster self-care and the adoption of healthy habits within the university environment, particularly among future health professionals.
