Abstract

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychological condition characterized by excessive concern with perceived imperfections in physical appearance. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of BDD and its associated factors among gym-goers practicing weight training in the city of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted using standardized instruments to assess BDD, body image perception, and exercise dependence. The sample consisted of 255 individuals, and data were analyzed using Poisson regression with robust variance. The main factors associated with BDD were: female gender, higher educational level, negative body image perception, overweight, obesity, and exercise dependence. The results show that although weight training is widely recommended for health promotion, it may also contribute to the development of pathological behaviors related to body image. The findings highlight the importance of interdisciplinary interventions that promote a balance between aesthetics and mental health in fitness environments.
