Abstract

Martin Buber's philosophy, centered on the “I-Thou” relationship, offers a profound approach to dealing with psychological suffering, especially in the context of youth. Adolescence and youth are critical periods in life when psychological suffering, often manifested through anxiety, depression, suicide, isolation, existential angst and identity crisis, can become a significant challenge. Buber suggests that this suffering can be alleviated through authentic relationships, where the individual is recognized in their totality and in their uniqueness. His “I-Thou” theory emphasizes that by establishing a true connection with the other, suffering is shared and the human experience becomes more meaningful. The aim of the study is to explore how Buber's philosophy can be applied in the context of young people, offering a way of coping with suffering and promoting emotional well-being. To this end, the work adopts a qualitative bibliographical analysis that integrates Buber's philosophical ideas with aspects of psychology and spirituality, seeking to understand how genuine encounter can be a transformative factor in the lives of young people. The research also investigates how spirituality, understood by Buber as a fundamental aspect of human experience, can contribute to the healing process. According to Buber, spirituality is not restricted to a formal religious concept, but involves the ability to connect with the divine, the other and the world in a horizontal, deep and authentic way. The results show that by cultivating relationships based on mutual respect and understanding, young people are able to reduce feelings of alienation and find a new perspective on their emotional difficulties. Spirituality, as a practice of connecting with the sacred and the other, also plays an important role in this process, providing a sense of purpose and belonging. By experiencing “I-Thou” encounters, young people can experience moments of emotional and psychological healing, strengthening their resilience in the face of suffering. It is concluded that Buber's philosophy offers a powerful vision for dealing with young people's psychological suffering, by highlighting the importance of authentic relationships and spirituality as fundamental tools for promoting young people's mental health and well-being. These practices of genuine connection enable young people to overcome suffering and develop the strength needed to face life's challenges.
