SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS OF THE PUBLIC LANDFILL IN THE CITY OF PARINTINS

Abstract

Urban solid waste is one of the main socioenvironmental challenges faced by Brazilian cities, since increasing consumption and the lack of treatment infrastructure lead to large volumes of garbage being sent to areas without adequate control. Under these conditions, especially in open dumps, problems such as soil and water contamination, foul odors, the presence of disease vectors, and a decline in the quality of life of surrounding populations are intensified. Within this context, the public dumpsite of the city of Parintins, located in the Djard Vieira neighborhood, exemplifies how inadequate management of urban solid waste becomes a permanent source of environmental and social impacts.This research aimed to analyze the environmental and social impacts of improper solid waste disposal at the public dumpsite of Parintins, focusing on the main consequences perceived by residents of the Djard Vieira neighborhood. The study investigated the types of waste present, disposal practices, and the resulting effects on the environment and on the health of local residents. The methodology used was qualitative and quantitative, with a descriptive approach, combining direct observation, photographic records, questionnaires, and data analysis using the Environmental Impact Assessment Matrix (MAIA). The results showed a mixture of organic and inorganic waste, a lack of proper waste management, and harm caused to the local population, such as foul odors, disease vectors, and soil and water pollution. The research highlights the need for public policies, environmental education, community participation, and effective action by the municipal government to mitigate these impacts and promote measures that prevent further damage to the environment.
