This article aims to analyze the situation of the teaching of additional languages in Brazilian public high schools, especially with regard to the English language. We will also go through the policies for language teaching in Brazil, in particular, the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC). Finally, we highlight the benefits of the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach as a suggestion for effective pedagogical practice in High School, based on an example carried out at the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo, on the Montanha campus, in which students were exposed to classes with geography and cultural studies content in English. A research was carried out about this experience and the data will be discussed. This work is based on the analysis of beliefs about the teaching of additional language in public schools, carried out by Lima (2011) and Leffa (2011); in addition to the discussions on bilingual education and CLIL by Garcia (2009).
