RIGHTS OF OLDER PERSONS IN BRAZIL: PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES

Abstract

This paper addresses the elderly population in relation to their rights in Brazilian territory. This topic leads us to a daily issue in Brazil, and it is essential, through documentary and bibliographic studies, to seek answers to questions such as: What are the advances and challenges regarding the rights of the elderly in Brazil? This text is justified by the importance of encouraging debate on the realization of citizenship and the quality of life of elderly people in Brazil. And when it comes to a country with significant contradictions like Brazil, where income differences and conditions of access to services provided by the State among the older age groups of the population stand out, the need becomes even more urgent. The objectives of the research were to describe the reality of the elderly population in Brazil, using existing public policies as a reference, presenting the historical process of the changes occurring in Brazil. The work also aims to point out the advances achieved regarding attention to this population group and to analyze the challenges encountered in guaranteeing the rights of older adults as a duty of the State, finally indicating possible improvements to the situation in Brazil. For this purpose, bibliographic and documentary research on the topic in focus was used as methodological procedures. After collecting, reading, and analyzing the content found, advances concerning legislation involving the rights of older adults were evident; however, it is necessary to implement measures that genuinely ensure the rights of this population.
