HEALTH EDUCATION ON ACUTE RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS IN CHILDHOOD: AN EXPERIENCE REPORT

Abstract

Introduction: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) comprise a group of diseases predominantly caused by viral agents. In Brazil, ARIs represent a significant public health problem in childhood, especially among children under five years of age, a group in which they account for approximately 30 to 50% of pediatric outpatient consultations and more than one-third of hospitalizations. Objective: To describe an educational intervention developed during the ECSO (Continuing Education in Childhood) of a nursing student, on Acute Respiratory Infections in children. Methodology: This is an experience report on the development of educational material about ARIs for parents and caregivers of children under five years of age, which was developed during the ECSO experience of the author's Nursing Course. Results: The dialogical strategy for approaching the material and content allowed for closer access by the participants, since they were able to consult it and clarify doubts autonomously, reinforcing the retention of the information discussed. Discussion: Health education is an essential tool for promoting quality care. Among the roles of the primary health care unit, the commitment to reducing harm and promoting healthy child development stands out. Conclusion: The experience provided the development of communication skills, active listening, and adaptation of technical language to a lay audience, competencies that are essential for the nurse's role in primary care.
