BRAZILIAN NURSING CARE IN MENTAL HEALTH: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

The Brazilian psychiatric reform, initiated in the 1970s, promoted the humanization of mental health care and the rupture with the asylum-based model. Within this context, Law No. 10.216/2001 established the rights of individuals with mental disorders and defined the responsibilities of professionals in the field. Given the complexity of psychiatric practice, specialized training has become increasingly relevant, such as residency programs in Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health. However, nurses still face challenges such as precarious working conditions and the need to provide comprehensive and humanized care. This study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the role of Brazilian nurses in mental health care. Searches were conducted in the BVS, PubMed, and SciELO databases, including original articles in Portuguese, published between 2012 and 2025, that addressed nursing practices in mental health in Brazil. After applying eligibility criteria and removing duplicates, 14 empirical studies were included and analyzed according to PRISMA guidelines. The synthesis of results revealed four main thematic categories: (1) professional training and qualification, (2) practice in Primary Care and matrix support, (3) clinical practices in acute and specialized contexts, and (4) care management, humanization, and professional attitudes. The evidence revealed significant gaps in initial training and continuing education in mental health, hindering the development of clinical and relational competencies. It is concluded that consolidating the role of nurses in mental health care depends on strengthening training policies and effectively implementing continuing education strategies aligned with the guidelines of the Psychosocial Care Network.
