BETWEEN PERSONAL PAIN AND STRUCTURAL SUFFERING: A DECOLONIAL CRITICISM OF BYUNG-CHUL HAN'S PALLIATIVE SOCIETY

This essay analyzes Byung-Chul Han's (2021) book *Palliative Society: Pain Today* from four axes: (i) the "physiology" of suffering in oppressors versus oppressed, (ii) the community dimension of pain, (iii) the ethical-political polysemy of suffering, and (iv) the critical hermeneutics of pain. It considers its merits in demonstrating how algophobia and the imperative of positivity establish a cultural and political regime that anesthetizes dissent and displaces suffering to the private sphere. It also examines its limitations, especially in omitting the structural pain of racialized and colonized populations. The article discusses how the democratization of relief, by silencing conflict, serves the interests of elites while concealing violent processes against marginalized groups. It proposes expanding this thesis through decolonial perspectives, revaluing rituals of collective catharsis, and distinguishing between existential and structural pain. It also proposes the construction of a plural and situated hermeneutics of pain capable of articulating empathic recognition and political engagement.
