HEMOVIGILANCE AND RISK CONTROL: CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES FOR BLOOD TRANSFUSION SAFETY

Hemovigilance is an essential strategy for ensuring transfusion safety, involving the detection, recording, and prevention of adverse events throughout the blood cycle. This study, based on a narrative literature review, aimed to analyze the challenges and strategies of hemovigilance for risk prevention and strengthening patient safety. Searches were conducted in SciELO, PubMed, LILACS, Google Scholar, and official documents from the Ministry of Health and ANVISA, covering publications between 2004 and 2025. The results highlight challenges such as underreporting, fragmented information systems, traceability gaps, and insufficient professional training. Preventive strategies include the standardization of clinical protocols, the use of integrated digital tools, ongoing training for multidisciplinary teams, and the strengthening of transfusion committees. The conclusion is that the integration of technology, education, and risk management is essential to consolidate hemovigilance as an effective tool for transfusion safety.
