THE ROLE OF NURSING IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF LEPROSY: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Objective: To analyze the impact of nursing on the early diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with leprosy, focusing on treatment adherence and quality of life. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted using the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Google Scholar databases, based on specific descriptors retrieved from the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS). Full articles available in Portuguese, English, or Spanish that addressed the proposed theme were included. Letters to the editor, duplicate articles, and those that did not directly address the theme were excluded. Results: It was observed that nursing has a significant impact on the early detection of leprosy, favoring more effective treatment and reducing disabilities. Adherence to treatment is directly related to health education promoted by nursing professionals, who also play an essential role in rehabilitation and supporting patients' quality of life. Conclusion: Nursing care contributes directly to the early diagnosis, treatment follow-up, and rehabilitation of patients with leprosy. Strengthening nursing strategies can improve treatment adherence and reduce the impact of the disease on individuals' lives.
