This study consolidates recent evidence on the optimization of physical layouts within reconfigurable manufacturing systems, aiming to map the employed methods, performance metrics, and observed impacts through a qualitative bibliographic review of indexed publications. Thirty peer-reviewed studies were analyzed and organized into four analytical categories: layout planning, performance metrics, optimization algorithms, and sustainability. The results indicated average increases of up to sixty-six percent in Overall Labor Effectiveness following interventions that combined machine repositioning, real-time sensing, and mathematical modeling, along with reductions in operator travel distances, internal energy consumption, and the occurrence of move-back cycles. It is concluded that industrial layouts should be managed as dynamic systems supported by digital twins, ESG indicators, and a culture of continuous improvement to maintain competitiveness in volatile markets.
