ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS AN ADVANCED HUMAN DEVELOPMENT CAPABILITY: ETHICAL CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Contemporary technological phenomena have consolidated themselves as a critical infrastructure of the 21st century, operating at the frontier between technical efficiency and the flourishing of the individual. This study analyzes the impasses and potentialities of integrating automated systems from the perspective of the Capabilities Approach. The research problem investigates to what extent the opacity and discriminatory tendency of algorithms restrict individual agency, identifying a gap in the literature regarding the connection between digital evolution and the expansion of substantive freedoms. Methodologically, a qualitative and exploratory literature review was conducted, with a corpus selected from scientific databases and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results indicate that, although technology enhances elementary functions in health and education, its implementation faces ethical barriers that require anthropocentric governance. It is concluded that data processing systems act as an advanced capability when mediated by safeguards that guarantee transparency and autonomy, suggesting that the success of digital progress depends on neutralizing structural inequalities crystallized in automated decision-making models.
