Abstract

Skin photoaging results from oxidative stress induced by ultraviolet radiation, which accelerates the degradation of collagen and elastin. Ferulic acid, a plant-derived phenolic compound, is notable for its potent antioxidant action and ability to neutralize free radicals, thereby protecting the extracellular matrix. The objective was to analyze the scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of ferulic acid in preventing skin photoaging induced by ultraviolet radiation. A systematic literature review was conducted in the PubMed, BVS, and Google Scholar databases, using the search terms “ferulic acid,” “photoaging,” and “ultraviolet radiation,” combined with Boolean operators. Eight articles comprised the final sample after screening based on eligibility criteria. The results demonstrated that ferulic acid significantly inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species and the expression of matrix metalloproteinases, in addition to stimulating the synthesis of type I procollagen in dermal fibroblasts. Nanoencapsulated formulations and multiple emulsions enhanced its stability and skin penetration, while 14% peels reduced hyperpigmentation and erythema in clinical trials, with effects persisting for up to one month. Synergy with vitamins C and E and stabilization of chemical sunscreens were also demonstrated. It is concluded that ferulic acid constitutes an effective preventive agent against photoaging, acting on multiple molecular targets, provided it is delivered via appropriate delivery systems with established safety profiles.
