Abstract

Patient safety is one of the main pillars of quality in healthcare, especially regarding the safe administration of medications. This case study, conducted at the Rio do Testo Hospital and Maternity (HMRT) in Pomerode, Santa Catarina, aims to analyze the performance of the multidisciplinary team in preventing medication-related errors. Based on the International Patient Safety Goals proposed by the World Health Organization, with emphasis on Goal 3, the study highlights the importance of adopting safe practices, effective communication among healthcare professionals, and continuous training of teams. The fundamental role of nursing in the early identification of risks and the implementation of preventive strategies is evident, aiming at reducing adverse events and promoting safer and more qualified care. This is a case study with an exploratory and field approach, based on a literature review. Scientific articles, books, and dissertations obtained from databases such as the Virtual Health Library, Google Scholar, and publications from the Ministry of Health were used, according to Marconi and Lakatos (2017). This study analyzes the quality and safety of care based on a pediatric clinical case treated in the emergency room. The patient, an 8-year-old girl, presented with dyspnea and developed suspected pneumonia, requiring intensive care. During treatment, medications were administered, including magnesium sulfate, which subsequently worsened her condition and necessitated intubation. The case highlights the risks associated with the inappropriate administration of medications, especially regarding dosage. It emphasizes the importance of rigorous monitoring and safe practices for the prevention of adverse events. It concludes that strengthening continuing education, improving prescription, dispensing, and medication administration processes, as well as integrated action between nursing, medical staff, pharmacy, and information technology, are essential for risk reduction and the promotion of safer and more effective care.
