CHILDHOOD DEPRESSION: THERAPEUTIC MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Depression in childhood and adolescence is a debilitating clinical condition that affects between 10% and 20% of the global youth population, severely impacting academic and social development. This narrative review analyzes contemporary therapeutic management strategies, highlighting the multifactorial nature of the disease, which involves everything from neurobiological dysregulation (HPA axis and BDNF) to dietary and inflammatory influences. Evidence suggests that psychotherapy, especially Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), is the first line of treatment for mild to moderate cases. In severe cases, pharmacotherapy with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)—such as fluoxetine—is indicated under strict monitoring. The review also addresses innovations such as digital interventions, music therapy, and nutritional supplementation (omega-3), reinforcing the need for a multidisciplinary and personalized approach to mitigate the risk of suicide and recurrence in adulthood.
