THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSIOTHERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF CHILDREN AGED 3 TO 5 YEARS DIAGNOSED WITH ASD: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and unique and recurrent patterns of behavior, activities, and interests. Physiotherapy plays a fundamental role in the treatment of children with ASD, primarily between the ages of 3 and 5, during the period of greatest neural plasticity and stabilization of functional motor skills (Soares & Guimarães, 2024). At this stage, crucial for the development of motor coordination, balance, and interaction, physiotherapy intervention can reduce motor impairments and improve overall functionality (Nestlé FamilyNes, 2025). Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to analyze scientific evidence, published between 2020 and 2025, on the effects of physiotherapy interventions on the functional and motor development of children with ASD aged 3 to 5 years. Method: Data were examined through the PubMed database using the descriptors "autism spectrum disorder", "physiotherapy", "motor skills", and "children". Studies indicate that physiotherapy programs, when organized, and especially those using sensorimotor approaches, sensory integration, and motor coordination exercises, develop benefits in gross, fine, and social skills. Furthermore, current reviews indicate that repeated and continued physiotherapy sessions are associated with functional improvement and a decrease in motor stereotypies (Soares & Guimarães, 2024). Results: It is concluded that physiotherapy is an important and effective intervention in the treatment of children aged 3 to 5 years with ASD, and can contribute to motor development, quality of life, and autonomy. Further studies are needed to strengthen the available evidence. Conclusion: Physiotherapy represents an effective and essential intervention for children aged 3 to 5 years diagnosed with ASD, promoting motor development, autonomy, and quality of life. Further randomized and longitudinal studies are required to strengthen existing evidence.
