RAZA CLYDESDALE Y PREDISPOSICIÓN AL LINFEDEMA CRÓNICO PROGRESIVO

El Clydesdale es una raza de caballos que existe desde el siglo XVIII, originaria de Lanarkshire, Escocia, y que debe su nombre al río Clyde. Fue desarrollado para apoyar las actividades agrícolas de la región y satisfacer las necesidades comerciales, especialmente en las minas de carbón. Una de sus características más llamativas es su hermoso físico: robusto, imponente, de implantación alta, con cabeza recta, cuello fuerte, cuerpo profundo y extremidades musculosas. A pesar de su tamaño, son dóciles y fáciles de entrenar. Debido a su belleza y carácter apacible, su reputación se ha extendido por toda Escocia y el norte de Inglaterra. A pesar de su rusticidad y buena salud general, esta raza es propensa a ciertas afecciones clínicas, como el linfedema crónico progresivo (LCP), bastante común en caballos de tiro y con orígenes multifactoriales asociados a factores genéticos, anatómicos y ambientales. La enfermedad progresa de forma lenta e irreversible, comenzando con edema y pudiendo derivar en fibrosis, ulceración y dermatitis, que afectan al bienestar y rendimiento de los animales. La enfermedad es irreversible, pero existen medidas de manejo para mejorar el bienestar animal.
