Abstract

Objective: This literature review aims to address the various current treatment strategies in restorative dentistry for the management of molar-incisor hypersensitivity (MIH). Methods: This is a narrative literature review using the PubMed database for recent scientific evidence related to therapeutic strategies for molar-incisor hypersensitivity. Complete, recent articles in Portuguese and English that directly addressed therapeutic strategies for molar-incisor hypomineralization were included. Studies unrelated to the topic, duplicate publications, and articles not indexed in the database were excluded. Selection was based on the analysis of titles, abstracts, and full texts, and the data were organized descriptively. Results: The results show that the treatment of molar-incisor hypomineralization should be individualized according to its severity. In mild cases, preventive approaches with fluorides, remineralizing agents, and desensitizing agents were effective in reducing hypersensitivity and preventing caries. Sealants showed limited benefit, mainly as a temporary measure. Lesions with structural loss required direct restorations, despite the challenges of adhesion to hypomineralized enamel. Microinvasive treatments showed good aesthetic results in lesions without cavitation. In severe cases, stainless steel crowns stood out for their longevity and sensitivity control, while planned extraction was indicated in situations of unfavorable prognosis. Conclusion: It was found that the success of Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization treatment depends on an integrated approach, with appropriate choice of restorative technique, patient management, and long-term follow-up, in addition to the advancement of new materials that favor better prognosis and quality of life.
