Abstract

Falls in older adults are a major public health problem and represent one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in this population. Understanding the level of knowledge of future health professionals about the risk factors related to this event is essential to guide more effective preventive strategies. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of physical therapy students about risk factors for falls in older adults. This is an exploratory study conducted with physical therapy students from the 4th semester onwards at a private university in São Luís, Maranhão, using a questionnaire consisting of ten closed true or false questions about risk factors for falls. Data collection was carried out in person, with a questionnaire created on the Google Forms platform with an access link made available in person in an academic environment. The data obtained were organized and tabulated in a spreadsheet and subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics, with calculation of the absolute and relative (%) frequency of correct and incorrect answers. The overall results showed an accuracy level of 82.9%, with most of the answers related to musculoskeletal, cognitive, and sensory changes. Knowledge about environmental risks was also consistent, however, there was less understanding of behavioral factors, such as alcohol consumption and confusion between intrinsic and extrinsic factors. It can be concluded that physical therapy students have a good understanding of the risk factors for falls, in line with contemporary literature. Nevertheless, important gaps remain, especially in the domain of behavioral determinants and in converting this knowledge into practice.
