G20 CONFERENCE IN PIAUÍ: ANALYSIS OF THE JOURNALISTIC COVERAGE OF THE GREEN CITY PORTAL IN THE G20

Abstract

This article analyzes the news coverage of the G20 event in the state of Piauí. The G20 is a forum for international economic cooperation that brings together the world's largest economies. The study aims to understand how the news portal Cidade Verde represented the state and its inhabitants during its coverage of the event. Critical Discourse Analysis, Bakhtin's Polyphony, was used to investigate the relationship between the text and the social context. Benveniste's Theory of Enunciation was used to understand the construction of meaning in statements. Bakhtin's Polyphony was used to analyze the presence of multiple voices in the discourse, focusing on seven news stories published by the portal between May 13 and 24, 2024. The Cidade Verde portal's coverage focused on topics such as combating hunger and developing family farming. Observations revealed that the portal uses discursive strategies to create a positive image of Piauí, but with little emphasis on the diversity of local voices and perspectives. This study contributes to the understanding of how regional media covers large-scale events. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of more diverse and inclusive news coverage that values public participation and promotes a more democratic debate on the issues at hand.
