Abstract

Introduction: Gestational diabetes is a public health concern due to the increased incidence of hyperglycemia during pregnancy and its potential complications for the mother and baby. Objective: To present clinical situations that are related with the development of Diabetes Mellitus during the gestational period, the implications for maternal-fetal health, as well as the relevant aspects to be considered for the use of this understanding in the prevention and treatment of the disease. Methods: This is a study carried out through a bibliographic survey of articles, theses and dissertations in the database: Scielo, Journal Capes, Medline, LILACS and Cochrane about Gestational Diabetes. Results: The final sample of this review consisted of twenty studies selected by the previously established inclusion criteria. Conclusions: The prevention, diagnosis and control measures for Gestational Diabetes presented in this integrative review point to the need for greater knowledge on the topic, its causes and consequences. Public policies to raise public awareness, as well as expanding access to prenatal care and providing continuing education for health professionals, are important allies in addressing this increasingly common condition.
