THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FAMILY SUPPORT AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING OF CAREGIVERS OF PEOPLE WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

This study analyzed the relationship between self-perceived family support and levels of depression, anxiety, and stress in parents of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed, including Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests to compare scores from the Family Support Perception Inventory (FSPI). Spearman’s correlation was used to assess the relationship between FSPI scores and the DASS-21 scale, classifying correlation strength as weak (<0.30), moderate (<0.50), or high (>0.50). The results showed a significant inverse correlation between FSPI and DASS-21: higher perceived family support was associated with lower levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. Depression had the strongest negative correlation (ρ = -0.340; p < 0.001), suggesting that caregivers with greater support experience fewer depressive symptoms. Specific aspects of support, such as affective consistency (ρ = -0.301; p = 0.002), family adaptation (ρ = -0.312; p = 0.001), and family autonomy (ρ = -0.254; p < 0.001), also showed significant correlations with psychological symptoms.
