Abstract

This study was a cross-over, randomized, split-mouth clinical trial with 30 volunteer patients who underwent two surgical procedures with protocol A for low-intensity laser auriculotherapy and B for control. The randomization protocol was established using the Sealed envelope program. The assessment of therapeutic effectiveness was based on subjective measurement of pain control using a visual analog scale (VAS). The data was first tabulated using Microsoft Excel® version 2015 and then analyzed using BioEstat® (version 5.3). Analysis of the pain data revealed that there were no statistically significant differences (Friedman, p=0.07) between the 3 times observed for protocol A, showing that the pain measured at 72 hours was similar to that at 24 and 48 hours. However, for protocol B it was possible to see that the level of pain observed at 24 hours was higher than at 48 and 72 hours, and in the latter period it was lower than at 48 hours. A comparison of the two protocols at each time point revealed that the pain levels observed for protocol B were higher (Wilcoxon) at 24 hours (p<0.0001), 48 hours (p<0.0001) and 72 hours (p=0.0027), concluding that there was a promising result in controlling post-operative pain with low-intensity laser auriculotherapy.
