Introduction: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from a defect in insulin production and/or action. It is currently considered a public health problem, as it presents with a metabolic dysfunction that is quite common during pregnancy. General Objective: To carry out a health education initiative on gestational diabetes mellitus. Specific Objectives: To provide guidance on preventive habits for gestational diabetes mellitus, including healthy eating habits and physical activity; to raise awareness of the importance of primary care in the context of maternal and child health; to understand the needs and experiences of pregnant women who attend medical appointments and follow-ups in primary care; to distribute an infographic with easy-to-understand vocabulary for pregnant women treated at the UBS, containing relevant information on the concept of preventive measures to avoid the development of the disease during pregnancy. Methodology: During the extension project, activities included lectures and discussion groups. Pregnant women were informed about GDM and its potential risks to the fetus and mother. They were also explained about healthy habits that should be maintained during pregnancy. Exercises were also performed to promote GDM awareness. Results and discussion: After the lecture and discussion group on gestational diabetes mellitus and its potential risks to the mother-baby pair during pregnancy, the mothers' concerns were identified and clarified. This also highlighted the importance of information during pregnancy to avoid potential harm and prevent an increase in the number of high-risk pregnancies in primary care patients. Conclusion: The lecture and discussion group on gestational diabetes mellitus, accompanied by a practical exercise demonstration, highlighted the importance of education and physical activity in managing this condition. The interaction provided essential clarification and raised awareness about preventive and therapeutic care, significantly contributing to maternal and fetal health.
