Abstract

BDSM, often stigmatized in contemporary society, is a complex expression of human sexuality whose pathologization has been challenged. This study investigates the psychological benefits of this practice, highlighting increased communication, trust-building, and sexual satisfaction. The historical analysis reveals deep-rooted stigmas, reflecting a moralistic view of sexuality. Theoretical approaches from Freud, Lacan, Foucault, and Deleuze and Guattari help depathologize BDSM, recognizing it as a legitimate form of sexual expression. Qualitative and descriptive research based on recent bibliographic sources highlights the role of communication, consent, and mutual respect in BDSM. The practice is understood as a journey of personal development and growth within the community, challenging social norms. Demystifying the stigmas associated with BDSM is crucial to promoting a more inclusive and respectful view of sexual diversity. Psychoanalysis offers insights into the emotional and psychological dynamics underlying BDSM, emphasizing the importance of a safe and consensual environment. Depathologizing BDSM contributes to a more inclusive and tolerant society, challenging power structures that regulate sexuality. Ongoing education is crucial for mental health professionals to offer safe and informed support to BDSM practitioners, recognizing their legitimacy and respecting their autonomy.
