BECOMING A TEACHER AT UERJ: ASSOCIATION IN MOVEMENT AND THE FIRST UNIVERSITY STRIKE (1977/80)

This paper aims to contribute to an understanding of the teacher’s identity construction in this university staff at the end of the business-military dictatorship and the first moments of the 1980s. It was a re-democratization period in Brazilian society, therefore, between the first clandestine meetings (1977) and the consolidation of Asduerj as a representative body and the first major strike (1980). This strike movement was fundamental for the consolidation of the teatchers’ association, Asduerj, as a representative body for the teacher’s category. At this time the university was facing a political dispute between two visions within the trade union movement, with the simultaneous existence of two associations: Asduerj and Apuerj. In this process, we discuss the relationship between the process of constructing the teachers' representative body and the very identity constitution of the Uerj teacher category. We draw on the contributions of the English historian E. P. Thompson and the Professor Deise Mancebo’s work (1996) on the origin and genesis of Uerj to dialog with the rich testimonies of the interviewees. We believe that memory of historical subjects will lead us to the intensity of this dimension essentially collective of this teacher’s movement constitution and the Uerj trajectory itself.
