FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RISKS OF MATERNAL AND NEONATAL MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) represents one of the main challenges in contemporary obstetrics, with increasing prevalence and significant public health impact. This study aimed to correlate the risks of maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality associated with GDM. This is a narrative literature review, conducted through searches in the SciELO, BVS, and PubMed databases, including articles published between 2019 and 2025. The results demonstrate that GDM substantially increases the maternal risk of developing pre-eclampsia and childbirth complications, in addition to being the main predictor for the future development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. For the neonate, complications include macrosomia, birth trauma, neonatal hypoglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome, and, in the long term, a "metabolic programming" that predisposes to obesity and diabetes in adult life. Epidemiological analysis revealed a national prevalence of approximately 14%, with significant regional particularities, such as in the Amazon region, where barriers to healthcare access worsen outcomes. It is concluded that rigorous and multifaceted management of GDM is essential to mitigate immediate risks and interrupt the intergenerational cycle of chronic diseases.
