Abstract

Obesity and arterial hypertension among young populations represent significant public health challenges, closely related to sedentary behavior and contemporary lifestyle changes. In this context, it becomes necessary to investigate intervention strategies that align with youth interests and encourage adherence to regular physical activity. This study aimed to analyze the contributions of urban dances as an intervention in combating obesity and hypertension in young populations, based on a bibliographic review of Brazilian scientific productions. The methodology consisted of a literature review, allowing the systematization of evidence related to the physiological, psychosocial, and sociocultural effects of urban dances. The results indicate that these body practices present relevant aerobic characteristics, contributing to increased energy expenditure, improved cardiorespiratory conditioning, and expanded weekly physical activity time. Positive impacts were also observed on psychosocial aspects such as self-esteem, body perception, and emotional well-being, which influence adherence to active lifestyles. The discussion highlights that the inclusion of urban dances in school and community contexts expands access to physical activity and strengthens health promotion strategies aimed at youth. It is concluded that urban dances represent a consistent and culturally meaningful alternative for preventing obesity and hypertension in young populations.
