With the growth of industrial activities in the state, the quality of the aquatic ecosystem of Rondônia, including those destined to supply the population, undergo large-scale changes. Due to the need for a high volume of water in the transformation of raw material into finished product, most leather industries are located close to water bodies, facilitating the collection of water and the disposal of effluents at the end of the process. Although the importance of the tanning activity is economically indisputable, due to the diversity of chemical products used in the process, the residues generated in the form of liquid effluents, solid residues and atmospheric emissions cause significant environmental impacts. Therefore, in view of the need to discuss and implement measures for cleaner and more sustainable production in the leather industry, the present work aims to survey the literature on the current situation of leather production techniques in order to obtain more information about the activity and discuss alternatives that lead to the use of a smaller volume of water and more efficient alternatives for the treatment of waste aimed at preserving water resources in the state of Rondônia, following the Sustainable Development Goals.
