CELIAC DISEASE: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF IMMUNOPATHOLOGICAL, DIAGNOSTIC, AND THERAPEUTIC ASPECTS

Objective: The central purpose of this study lies in the analysis of academic production concerning Celiac Disease, with the aim of elucidating its main clinical manifestations, the most recurrent comorbidities and the predominant therapeutic methods used in the management of this disease. Methodology: This is a systematic review aimed at understanding the fundamental aspects of Celiac Disease. The investigation was guided by the following question: “What are the clinical manifestations, associated pathologies and treatment strategies for Celiac Disease in pediatric patients, in light of the evidence available in the scientific literature?” To answer this question, searches were carried out in the PubMed database, using three descriptors combined using the Boolean operator “AND”. The research resulted in 268 publications, of which 17 were selected to compose the analytical corpus. Results: Celiac Disease (CD) is an immune-mediated disease that compromises the gastrointestinal tract and can trigger a variety of symptoms, including extraintestinal manifestations. The diagnosis is established through serological tests and biopsies, with the exclusion of gluten from the diet being the only proven effective treatment. Strict adherence to the gluten-free diet is essential for clinical recovery, although adherence may vary between patients, directly influencing long-term health. Conclusion: CD is correlated with other diseases of an autoimmune and genetic nature, requiring continuous clinical monitoring and multidisciplinary support to ensure the complete well-being of affected individuals.
