PRIMARY CARE AND THE IMPACT OF CLINICAL MANAGEMENT WITH OPHTHALMOLOGY SUPPORT

Primary Health Care (PHC) plays a crucial role in the early identification and management of ophthalmologic conditions, as it serves as the main gateway for health promotion and disease prevention. This narrative review aimed to analyze the impact of clinical management in PHC supported by ophthalmology, emphasizing the benefits of integrating visual health strategies into basic care. The study was conducted through searches in the PUBMED, LILACS, and SCIELO databases between January and July 2024, using the descriptors “primary health care,” “clinical management,” and “ophthalmology.” Of the 159 articles initially identified, only nine met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results demonstrated that early ophthalmologic screening, teleconsultation, and electronic medical records strengthen the diagnostic capacity of PHC, reduce the demand for specialized services, and optimize the quality of care. Furthermore, the integration of ophthalmology into PHC enables the early detection of systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which often present with ocular manifestations. Therefore, investing in the training of PHC professionals, expanding access to digital tools, and developing public policies focused on ocular health are essential to ensure comprehensive, efficient, and equitable care.
