Abstract

Cervical cancer represents a significant public health problem in Brazil, especially among women in socially vulnerable situations. Although it is a disease capable of prevention and early detection, its incidence and mortality remain high, reflecting inequalities in access to health services and information. This article aims to report the experience of an elderly woman living in a rural area, with a history of social exclusion and without prior access to cytopathological testing, who was diagnosed with advanced-stage cervical cancer. This qualitative study adopts the experience report methodology with content analysis and contextualization through a narrative literature review. The narrative highlights factors such as misinformation, cultural barriers, difficulties in access, and resistance to preventive care, highlighting the central role of nursing in promoting women's health, especially in Primary Care. The work of nursing professionals proved essential in providing qualified listening, welcoming, performing Pap smears, and providing health education. The reported case also highlights the importance of expanding awareness strategies in community settings and promoting adherence to HPV vaccination. It concludes that, to overcome the challenges related to early screening and timely treatment, it is essential to strengthen public policies, expand coverage of preventive exams, and invest in improving primary care, with an emphasis on humane, educational, and inclusive actions, promoting comprehensive care and health equity.
