THE ROLE OF PHYSIOTHERAPY IN PROMOTING HEALTH IN PRIMARY CARE WITHIN THE BRAZILIAN UNIFIED HEALTH SYSTEM (SUS): AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Primary Health Care (PHC) constitutes the main entry point to the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and has as one of its pillars the promotion of health through comprehensive and multidisciplinary actions. In this context, physiotherapy has been expanding its role beyond the traditional rehabilitation model, assuming a relevant role in strategies for preventing health problems and promoting health. This study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the role of physiotherapy in health promotion within the context of PHC, highlighting its contributions, strategies, and challenges. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, conducted according to the recommendations of PRISMA 2020. The search was carried out in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SciELO, and LILACS databases, covering publications between 2009 and 2025. After applying the eligibility criteria, nine studies were included for analysis. The results showed that physiotherapy has expanded its participation in primary health care (PHC) through educational activities, physical activity groups, postural guidance, home visits, monitoring of people with chronic diseases, and integrated work in multidisciplinary teams. Studies pointed to benefits related to health promotion, prevention of complications, improved functionality, increased quality of life, and strengthening the comprehensiveness of care. However, challenges were identified such as the persistence of the profession's rehabilitative view, structural limitations of services, insufficient professionals, and the need for greater recognition of its responsibilities in PHC. It is concluded that physiotherapy plays a strategic role in PHC, contributing to the construction of a more preventive, humanized, and population-centered care model. Strengthening public policies, multidisciplinary work, and training focused on public health is fundamental to consolidating the physiotherapist's insertion at this level of care.
