Abstract

Continuous exposure to heat tools degrades keratin, reduces water content, and eliminates superficial lipids, severely compromising the hair fiber structure. To combat this damage, the development of protective cosmetics has become essential. Focusing on this demand, this research compares the efficacy of synthetic silicones and pracaxi vegetable oil in the thermal protection of hair, considering film formation, stability under high temperatures, and the effective reduction of damage. The study is based on a qualitative literature review, searching platforms such as PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar, selecting articles that detail the mechanisms of action and physicochemical properties of these active ingredients. The study shows that silicones guarantee superior direct thermal protection, as their high stability allows the formation of a continuous barrier that minimizes heat damage. Pracaxi oil, on the other hand, acts in conditioning and superficial protection through a lipid film, but presents stability limitations under heat exposure. Therefore, these compounds operate through distinct and non-exclusive pathways, and the association between them is a strategy that can promote the maintenance of the hair fiber.
