MENTAL HEALTH IN THE ELDERLY: THE ROLE OF NURSING IN CARE AND PROMOTING WELL-BEING

Abstract

Population aging represents one of the main demographic phenomena of our time, demanding greater attention to the physical, emotional, and social needs of older adults. Among the most relevant challenges is mental health, frequently impacted by factors such as social isolation, family losses, chronic diseases, functional dependence, and cognitive changes. In this context, this article aims to discuss the importance of mental health in older adults and analyze the role of nursing in care and the promotion of well-being. This is a narrative literature review, based on scientific publications, public policies, and theoretical frameworks on aging and nursing care. It is observed that disorders such as depression, anxiety, dementia, and loneliness have a high prevalence among older adults, directly interfering with their quality of life. Nursing stands out as an essential profession in comprehensive care, through welcoming, qualified listening, early identification of signs of psychological distress, health education, strengthening of family ties, and encouragement of autonomy. It is concluded that nurses play a strategic role in promoting the mental health of older adults, contributing to active, dignified, and healthy aging.
