Abstract

Rhinitis is a frequent inflammatory disease of the upper airways, with a significant impact on quality of life, especially in the pediatric population. Chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa is frequently associated with adenoid hypertrophy, contributing to symptoms such as nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, and sleep disorders (BROŻEK et al., 2017; SEIDMAN et al., 2015). Nasal corticosteroids represent the first-line clinical treatment for various forms of rhinitis, due to their potent local anti-inflammatory action and good safety profile (BACHERT; HELLINGS, 2020; SEIDMAN et al., 2015). The objective of this study was to review the scientific literature on the use of nasal corticosteroids in the treatment of rhinitis and to analyze their association with the clinical management of adenoid hypertrophy. This is a narrative literature review, conducted using national and international databases (BROŻEK et al., 2017). The studies analyzed demonstrate that nasal corticosteroids are effective in controlling rhinitis symptoms and can contribute to reducing symptoms associated with adenoid hypertrophy, potentially postponing or reducing the need for surgical treatment in selected cases (CINAR et al., 2013; DEMIRHAN et al., 2010). It is concluded that nasal corticosteroids constitute a safe and effective therapeutic option in the management of rhinitis and its repercussions on the upper airways (BACHERT; HELLINGS, 2020; SEIDMAN et al., 2015).
