Abstract

Charcoal is a type of fuel made from plant matter and other organic compounds, widely used in rural areas to fuel home ovens for cooking. However, the use and production of this product are associated with a number of health problems, mainly affecting the tissues of the respiratory tract, due to particulate matter and harmful organic compounds released into the air during its combustion. An integrative review was conducted based on literature available in databases such as ScienceDirect, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed, and Capes Journals, to investigate this topic. Seven original studies in Portuguese and English, conducted in various countries between 2018 and 2024, were included in the final project. The studies showed that exposure to charcoal is harmful to the tissues of the respiratory tract and can induce pathologies such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and pulmonary fibrosis, in addition to other symptoms such as cough, rhinorrhea, and inflammatory processes. It was concluded that there is a need for more in-depth research on the topic to better understand the effects of chronic exposure to charcoal, along with raising awareness among exposed communities about the risks associated with charcoal.
