The aim of this article is to examine how the concept of “sympathy,” as formulated by Adam Smith in the work The Theory of Moral Sentiments, contributes to an understanding of Philoctetes’ suffering and the moral conflict experienced by Neoptolemus in Sophocles’ homonymous tragedy. By connecting the dramatic elements of the play with Smith’s reflections on affective solidarity, the article seeks to show how physical pain, compassion, and audience response can be interpreted through the lens of the Scottish philosopher’s moral theory.
