Abstract

The Family Health Strategy (FHS) represents the priority model for organizing Primary Health Care (PHC) in Brazil, based on principles of comprehensiveness, continuity of care, and community orientation. This literature review aims to analyze the scientific literature on the effectiveness and challenges faced by the FHS. The methodology consisted of a narrative literature review, using selected articles that address the topics of family health and primary care. The results indicate that the effectiveness of the FHS is manifested in the ability of family physicians to lead multidisciplinary teams, promote holistic and person-centered care, and improve health equity in vulnerable communities. Integrated academic training and ongoing professional development are pillars of the model's success. However, the strategy faces significant challenges, such as work overload, a shortage of qualified professionals, team burnout, and the need to improve skills in areas such as management, leadership, and digital health. It is concluded that, despite its proven effectiveness, the consolidation and expansion of the ESF depend on addressing its structural challenges, with continued investment in training, professional development, and strengthening of healthcare networks.
