ADVERSE EFFECTS IN THE ORAL CAVITY OF PATIENTS UNDER DIFFERENT CHEMOTHERAPY PROTOCOLS IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM

The present study analyzed the biological effects of chemotherapy on the oral cavity, focusing on cellular toxicity in healthy tissues, clinical manifestations, and the impact on the quality of life of cancer patients. Based on a literature review conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases, articles published between 2008 and 2024 in Portuguese and English were selected, including qualitative, quantitative, descriptive studies and clinical trials that addressed the dental consequences of chemotherapy. The results showed that the non-selective action of chemotherapeutic agents on highly mitotic cells is responsible for the development of complications such as mucositis, xerostomia, candidiasis, ulcerations, dental changes, and neurotoxicity, especially in the oral mucosa and the development of teeth in pediatric patients. Oral mucositis can affect up to 80% of patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy regimens, while late changes in the maxillomandibular complex impact about 70% of children in treatment. The severity of these manifestations is related to the therapeutic protocol, previous oral health, and the patients’ systemic condition. It was observed that the interdisciplinary work of the dental surgeon with the oncology team is fundamental for preventing and managing these complications, promoting reduced morbidity, treatment adherence, and improved quality of life. The development of preventive protocols and selective therapies with lower cellular toxicity is recommended, aiming for better clinical and functional outcomes for cancer patients.
