Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the main indications and limitations of resorbable plates and biomaterials in the treatment of facial fractures. The search was conducted in July 2025 using PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science, covering a five-year time period. The search strategy consisted of a combination of the DeCS/MeSH descriptors "Bone plates," "Biocompatible materials," and "Maxillofacial Surgery," combined with Boolean operators (OR and AND), and adapted according to the specificities of each database. The inclusion criteria were: articles published in the last five years (2020–2025) that met the research objective, with full text available in English, Portuguese, or Spanish in the databases. Conversely, the exclusion criteria were texts that did not answer the guiding question, studies conducted with animals, articles that did not correspond to the proposed thematic scope, those written in languages other than those previously defined, and duplicate articles. The initial search resulted in the identification of 1,211 articles. Of these, 12 articles were included in the research after exclusion of duplicates and application of the selection criteria. Thus, it is observed that the use of resorbable plates and other biomaterials minimizes late complications and ensures adequate functional rigidity. However, under high biomechanical loads, these systems can fail, trigger inflammatory reactions, and impair bone healing, highlighting that, in fixation, the type of fracture, function, and patient profile must be considered.
