Abstract

Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure that involves opening the anterior wall of the trachea, connecting it to the outside environment and making the airway patent. It is indicated in elective surgeries for head and neck tumors or tumor obstruction. Important nursing care includes changing the tracheal cannula set, cleaning the paraostomal area, observing the presence of exudate around the stoma, and tracheostomy aspiration. It is important to maintain the patency of the tracheal cannula through cleaning, due to the possibility of obstruction by the accumulation of secretions, which can lead to interruption of respiratory flow.
