FROM SCHIZOPHRENIC DIAGNOSIS TO AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER: TRANSFORMATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF DSM-5

This article describes the transformations in the concept of autism throughout the 20th century. The overall objective is to analyze the transformation of the concept of autism in relation to the expansion of diagnoses. Among the specific objectives, the study seeks to: a) present historical perspectives present in the transformation of the concept of autism; b) problematize autism in the different versions of the DSM; c) analyze the influence of psychiatric knowledge/power in the expansion of autism diagnoses. The justification for the study finds quantitative references in data from INEP (2022), which observes that in 2012, there were 20,511 students diagnosed with autism enrolled in Brazilian special education, a number that reached 405,056 in 2022. Finally, the research analyzes how changes in the concept of autism, according to the different versions of the DSM, may have contributed to the expansion of diagnoses. In line with these analyses, the classificatory and generalizing bias associated with the use of the aforementioned manual is also discussed.
