Abstract

Endometritis is a leading cause of subfertility in mares, resulting in reproductive failure and significant economic losses. This study aimed to identify the microorganisms associated with endometritis in Mangalarga Marchador mares and to evaluate the antimicrobial sensitivity profile of the isolated bacterial agents. Uterine samples from 52 mares with a history of subfertility were analyzed. These samples were collected by aseptic uterine lavage during the 2024/2025 breeding season in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro. A total of 35 microorganisms were isolated, including 24 bacteria and 11 fungi. The most prevalent bacterial agents were Escherichia coli, Streptococcus equi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The presence of Bordetella spp. was first recorded in an equine uterine sample, raising hypotheses of iatrogenic contamination associated with reproductive practices. The antimicrobial resistance profile revealed greater resistance to cephalexin, cefotaxime, and enrofloxacin, while neomycin, doxycycline, and amikacin demonstrated greater efficacy in vitro. The findings reinforce the importance of microbiological identification and the use of antibiograms for therapeutic targeting, in addition to the need for strict biosafety protocols in reproductive biotechnologies.
