THE STRUCTURE OF INDUSTRIAL EMPLOYMENT IN THE NORTHEAST IN THE NINETIES

This study aimed to analyze the evolution of industrial employment in the Northeast by sector and company size, the relative specialization of industrial employment in the region, and average compensation since 1990, when the Brazilian trade liberalization program began. We used the Constant Market Share Analysis method, which decomposes the increase in regional shares of national employment, attributing it to their sectoral profile and the competitiveness of each region within the sectors. The research was qualitative and quantitative in nature, with a bibliographic approach using books and academic articles, and descriptive statistics, using data from the RAIS/MTE. Based on RAIS data for 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2000, a process of industrial deconcentration was observed. This is at least the case when observing the behavior of industrial employment in the Northeast. While in Brazil it declined, in that region it increased, both in absolute terms and in relation to the Brazilian total, due to the active participation of its states in the so-called fiscal war and the strong attractiveness of low wages. In the Northeast, the number of sectors in which industrial employment grew was greater.
