Abstract

Introduction: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a medical condition that has been linked to the use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs), particularly those with high doses of ethinylestradiol (EE), to an increased risk of DVT.Objective: This systematic review aimed to investigate the association between high-dose EE COC use and DVT development in adult women. Methods: The search was conducted across PubMed, BVS, and Cochrane databases for studies that examined the connection between high-dose EE COC use and DVT in adult women. Results: Three relevant studies were identified, two cohort studies and one clinical trial. The studies demonstrated that high-dose EE COC use is associated with an increased risk of DVT. However, the studies exhibited inconsistencies in the magnitude of the risk. Discussion: The findings suggest that high-dose EE COC use is associated with an elevated risk of DVT. However, further research is warranted to determine the incidence and identify specific risk factors for women using these contraceptives. Conclusion: It is crucial that women using high-dose EE COCs are aware of the DVT risk and engage in discussions with their healthcare providers, with Individualized assessments, considering risk factors and epigenetic factors.
